To practice in West Virginia all radiologist assistants must hold an active status certification issued by the Board AND an approved Job Description.
All applications which do not complete within six months will expire, at which time reapplication will be necessary to continue in the certification process.
There are two primary pathways for radiologist assistant certification in West Virginia: (1) the traditional licensure pathway; and (2) the Universal Professional and Occupational Licensing Act of 2025 ("UPOLA”) pathway.

UPOLA Pathway. To utilize the UPOLA pathway, radiologist assistants must either: (1) establish residency in the state of West Virginia; or (2) be married to an active-duty member of the armed forces of the United States and have accompanied the member to an official permanent change of station to a military installation located in West Virginia and meet the statutory requirements for UPOLA licensure, including:
Radiologist assistants who do not meet these criteria are ineligible to use the UPOLA pathway and are invited to apply through the traditional pathway.
A Job Description sets forth the scope of practice and job duties that a radiologist assistant certified by the Board is approved to perform under the supervising radiologist(s) while practicing in West Virginia.
A radiologist assistant shall not commence practice in West Virginia until a fully completed Job Description is filed with the Board and the Board notifies the radiologist assistant that the Job Description has been approved.
An approved Job Description authorizes a radiologist assistant to perform the job duties identified by the supervising radiologist(s) in conformity with the radiologist assistant's education, training and experience.
Notice of approval of a Job Description will be provided to the radiologist assistant and the supervising radiologist(s) via email.

Any application for changes to current job description(s) must be submitted to the Board thirty (30) days prior to a regularly scheduled Board meeting.
Notification of Changes to Employment/Supervision
The radiologist assistant is required to notify the Board of any changes to his or her employment within thirty (30) days.
The supervising radiologist is required to notify the Board of any changes to his or her supervision of a radiologist assistant within ten (10) days.
