Board President Elected to National Post

Charleston, WV – Dr. Ahmed D. Faheem, president of the West Virginia Board of Medicine, has been elected to a two-year term on the Nominating Committee of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). The election took place during the FSMB’s 106th annual meeting in Charlotte, NC.

Faheem, a Beckley psychiatrist, was formally elected to the post on Saturday and officially begins his duties on Tuesday, May 1. His term continues through April 30, 2020.

“I am honored to serve in this important capacity for such a prestigious national organization,” Faheem said. “My goal is to encourage the right candidates to seek leadership opportunities and assist in their ability to succeed in guiding physicians and protecting the public.”

Mark A. Spangler, executive director of the WVBOM, pointed out that Faheem is now in his fourth five-year term on the state board. “He is a physician of impeccable credentials, vast experience and seemingly boundless energy,” Spangler said. “He guides our 16-member board with a steady hand, and continues to share his expertise at the local, state and national levels.”

Faheem, originally from India, completed medical and residency training India, England and the United States. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and by the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry. In addition to a full-time private practice, Faheem is a clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at West Virginia University in Morgantown, and medical director of the Adolescent Program and associate medical director of  the Adult Addiction and Geriatric Program at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

He has been recognized by the West Virginia State Medical Association and the West Virginia Mutual Insurance Co. for leadership in malpractice reform and community service, chaired the state’s Comprehensive Behavioral Health Commission from 2006 to 2014, and served on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Substance Abuse at the request of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

Faheem served on the West Virginia Board of Medicine from 1993 to 2002. He rejoined the board in November 2010 and his current appointment expires in September 2019.

The FSMB represents 70 state medical and osteopathic regulatory boards within the U.S., its territories and the District of Columbia.  It supports its member boards as they fulfill their mandate of protecting the public’s health, safety and welfare through the proper licensing, disciplining and regulation of physicians and, in most jurisdictions, other health care professionals.

The organization’s Nominating Committee is responsible for submitting a roster of one or more nominees for each upcoming vacancy on the FSMB’s Board of Directors, as well as the Nominating Committee itself. The committee meets via teleconference each August and March, and in person each January, to finalize a roster of candidates. Committee members generally interview three to five candidates for each position.
