Educational Permit Renewal
All graduate medical training participants must hold either a West Virginia medical license or an educational permit. An educational permit is not a license to practice medicine and surgery. All current educational permits expire at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on June 30, 2024. Residents and fellows who plan to continue training in West Virginia after June 30, 2024 and who do not receive a medical license by May 20, 2024, must complete the permit renewal process to continue in graduate medical training after June 30, 2024. Permit holders are eligible to renew if they are in good standing and remain under contract in their current graduate medical education program. The Board strongly encourages early renewal.
Permit holders who are changing residency programs or beginning a fellowship program and who do not hold an active status medical license will need to submit an initial educational permit application.
Physicians who are not continuing in training after June 30, 2024 do not need to take any action.
The renewal application is similar to the initial permit application. The renewal applicant must complete Section A, and the program must complete Section B. Once completed, the original renewal application will need to be mailed to the Board office. The Board must receive the completed application and payment of the renewal fee prior to the renewal deadline of 4:30 pm EDT on Friday, June 28, 2024.
The renewal application fee is $100. Do not include the renewal application fee with the application. Upon receipt of the completed renewal application, the Board will send specific payment instructions via email to the email address provided on the application. Do not pay the renewal application fee until you receive an email from the Board directing you to do so. Payment of an incorrect fee will delay the renewal process. The renewal application is incomplete until payment of the renewal application fee is received.
