Controlled Substance Dispensing Practitioner Registration Renewal for Physician Assistants

Effective at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on March 31, 2025, all controlled substance dispensing practitioner registrations for physician assistants will expire unless successfully renewed during the Board’s renewal period. Please note that a controlled substance dispensing registration is only required for providers who administer and/or dispense controlled substances in an office-based practice. It is not required for: (1) inpatient hospital practice; or (2) to write prescriptions which are dispensed by a pharmacy.

Physician assistants who will not be dispensing and/or administering controlled substances in an office-based setting after March 31, 2025 do not need to take any action and his/her registration will simply expire.

Renewal Process

On January 1, 2025, the Board mailed a 2025 Controlled Substance Dispensing Practitioner Registration Renewal Application to the mailing address of record for physician assistants who are currently registered to dispense and/or administer controlled substance medications in an office-based setting. Physician assistants who do not receive a renewal application in the mail by February 10, 2025 should email the Board.

To renew a controlled substance dispensing practitioner registration physician assistants must:

  1. Successfully renew his/her physician assistant license.
  2. Submit the original completed renewal application to the West Virginia Board of Medicine, via US Mail, early enough that it arrives before the renewal deadline of 4:30 pm on March 31, 2025.

Accuracy and completeness are important to ensure the efficient processing of renewal applications. All incomplete applications will be returned to your mailing address of record with the Board unprocessed.

Renewal Fee

The renewal application fee is $30 per dispensing location. Do not include the renewal application fee with the application.  The West Virginia Board of Medicine accepts online credit card payments for all fees. Upon receipt of a completed renewal application, the Board will send payment instructions to the physician assistants email address of address with the Board.  Applications are incomplete until payment of the renewal application fee is received.

A physician assistant may only dispense and/or administer controlled substances at practice locations where he/she has an active practice notification.

The renewal application AND the renewal application fee must be received prior to 4:30 pm EDT on March 31, 2025 to avoid expiration.

There is no grace period if a registration expires.
