2025 Interstate Telehealth Registration Renewal

An interstate telehealth registration is not a license to practice medicine and surgery in West Virginia, and only authorizes practitioners to provide telehealth services to West Virginia patients.

Effective at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight-Time (EDT) on March 31, 2025, all current interstate telehealth registrations for medical doctors and physician assistants will expire unless successfully renewed during the Board’s renewal period.

Interstate telehealth registration renewal begins on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 8:30 am and ends at 4:30 pm EDT on Monday, March 31, 2025. Failure to renew by this deadline will result in registration expiration. Because there is no grace period for practice after expiration, the Board strongly encourages early renewal to avoid unexpected problems or delays in renewal completion.

  1. Do I need to renew my interstate telehealth registration in 2025?

If you will be providing telehealth services to patients located in West Virginia from another US state after March 31, 2025, you must hold either a West Virginia license or an interstate telehealth registration.

  1. What is the renewal application deadline?

To avoid expiration of your interstate telehealth registration, your complete renewal application and the associated renewal fee must be received by the Board before 4:30 pm EDT on Monday, March 31, 2025.

  1. I am not interested in keeping my West Virginia interstate telehealth registration. Do I need to renew?

No, if you will not be providing telehealth services to patients located in West Virginia from another US state after March 31, 2025, you do not need to take any action and your registration will simply expire at 11:59 pm EDT on March 31, 2025.

  1. How do I renew my interstate telehealth registration?

The renewal application and instructions will be available on the Board's website beginning on Februrary 5, 2025.

  1. Can I renew online?

No. At this time, the interstate telehealth registration renewal application is a paper application.

  1. Who can renew my registration for me?

You are the only person authorized to complete your interstate telehealth registration renewal application.

  1.  Will I need to submit any documents with my renewal applications?

Maybe. If you answer “yes” to any of the questions, you must provide a written explanation for each “yes” response and produce all related documentation. Your application will be considered incomplete if you do not provide the required explanations and documentation.

  1. How much does it cost to renew my registration?

The renewal fee is $175 for medical doctors and $50 for physician assistants.

  1. How do I pay my renewal fee?

Upon receipt of your completed renewal application, the Board will send payment instructions to the email address provided on the renewal application. Your application will not be processed until payment is received. Please submit your application early to ensure adequate time for receipt and subsequent payment prior to the renewal deadline.

  1. How do I know if my renewal fee payment has been accepted?

After you pay your renewal fee, you will receive an email receipt from the West Virginia Treasurer’s e-gov payment system at the email address you enter into the payment screen.  Please open the receipt, which is provided as an attachment to the email, to verify that your payment was successfully submitted.

  1. What happens if my payment fails?

Your application is incomplete until your renewal fee payment is successfully submitted.  Your renewal application, along with your payment, must be received on or before 4:30 pm EDT on Monday, March 31, 2025, or your registration will expire.

  1. How long does it take to process my renewal application?

If you will be providing telehealth services to patients located in West Virginia from another US state after March 31, 2025, the Board recommends that you apply for renewal by March 15, 2025.  While the Board makes every effort to process renewal applications efficiently, March is an extremely busy month for the Board. While all complete applications received before the renewal deadline will be processed, confirmation of registration renewal may take longer, and may be delayed beyond March 31, 2025.

  1. How will I know if my interstate telehealth registration renewal application has been processed?

The Board will email your 2025-2026 registration to the email provided on your renewal application once your registration has been successfully renewed.

  1. What happens if I don’t renew my interstate telehealth registration?

Your interstate telehealth registration will expire at 11:59 pm EDT on March 31, 2025, and you will not be authorized to provide telehealth services to patients located in West Virginia from another US state.

  1. I am applying for a license, but the license has not been granted yet. I hope to receive a license in May 2025. Do I need to renew my interstate telehealth registration?

Yes. You may not provide telehealth services to patients located in West Virginia from another US state after March 31, 2025 without either a license or an interstate telehealth registration.  If your application will not be/was not granted by the Board as of March 10, 2025, you will not receive a license before May 5, 2025. To practice after March 31, 2025 and until licensure is obtained, you will need to practice pursuant to an interstate telehealth registration.

  1. I can’t finish my renewal application and get it to the Board by 4:30 pm EDT on Monday, March 31, 2025. What happens now?

Your interstate telehealth registration will expire at 11:59 pm EDT on March 31, 2025, and you will not be eligible to provide telehealth services to patients located in West Virginia from another US state.

  1. My interstate telehealth registration expired on March 31, 2025. How do I get it back?

You may reapply for an interstate telehealth registration. Information regarding reinstatement of an interstate telehealth registration will be available on the Board’s website beginning April 1, 2025.

  1. Who can I contact at the Board with a question about renewal?

Please review the renewal FAQs carefully before reaching out to the Board with questions.  The overwhelming majority of telephone inquiries the Board received regarding renewal are resolvable by reviewing the Renewal FAQs and other information readily available on the Board’s website. The Board’s preferred method of contact at this time is via email. Please email questions that cannot be resolved via the FAQs to Carmella.L.Walker@wv.gov.

  1. I’m a PA, how does my registration renewal affect my practice notification(s)?

Renewal of your registration will not affect your activated practice notification(s). Failure to renew your registration will automatically terminate any practice notification(s) effective March 31, 2025, at 11:59 pm EDT.

  1. I’m a PA, can I renew my registration if I don’t have a practice notification?
