Educational Permit Renewal
As of July 1, 2019, all graduate medical training participants must hold either a West Virginia medical license or an educational permit. All current educational permits expire at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EDST) on June 30, 2019. Physicians who plan to continue training in West Virginia after June 30, 2019 must apply for permit renewal. Permit holders are eligible to renew if they are in good standing and remain under contract in their current graduate medical education program.
On March 29, 2019, the Board mailed Renewal Applications to all current permit holders. The renewal application is similar to the initial permit application. The renewal fee is $100. The renewal applicant must complete Section A, and the program must complete Section B.
The deadline for the Board’s receipt of complete renewal applications is 4:30 pm EDST on Friday, June 28, 2019. The Board will not accept renewal applications on Saturday, June 29, 2019 or Sunday, June 30, 2019. Please mail your original renewal application and the renewal fee early enough that it arrives at the Board office before the renewal deadline of 4:30 pm on Friday, June 28, 2019. The Board strongly encourages early renewal.
Physicians who are not continuing in training after June 30, 2019 do not need to take any action.
An educational permit is not a license to practice medicine and surgery. Physicians who plan to continue in training after June 30, 2019 and who do not receive a medical license by May 20, 2019, must complete the permit renewal process to continue in graduate medical training after June 30, 2019.
